Initial training for new VITAL volunteers: Information about volunteering at the Monroe County Public Library and VITAL, an overview of adult literacy and English language learning and the expectations of volunteers, learners, and staff involved. Orientation is mandatory before volunteering in VITAL.

VITAL English Language Group: Conversation with Shane Tang

New English speakers will practice everyday language skills in a relaxed, informal atmosphere. Learners will enjoy friendly conversation, learn about daily life in the U.S., gain confidence, and meet new people from around the world. 

Intermediate English skills are suggested. If you do not speak English, please fill out the VITAL Services form to learn about programs for beginners. Conversation Groups are drop-in and no registration is needed.

Southwest Branch Grand Opening

Join us to celebrate the grand opening of the new Southwest Branch (890 W. Gordon Pike, Bloomington) with a ribbon cutting, food, special events and performances, and opportunities to enjoy the new spaces within the branch. Learn more about the Southwest Branch. All ages.

We'll have performances by:
  • Bloomington Symphony Orchestra
  • Indiana University Jacobs School of Music
  • Bloomington High School North
  • Batchelor Middle School
We'll also have two cooking demos:
  • 3–4 PM: Bright beet hummus demonstration by Kayte Young, producer and host of Earth Eats
  • 5:30–6:30 PM: Tyropitakia (cheese pies) demonstration by Olga Kalentzidou, lecturer from the Indiana University Department of Geography
