Thursday, June 29, 2023
6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Join this book club to discuss nature-focused reads each month. You'll also learn how to become more ecologically-minded through activities and speakers designed to enhance our reading. This month, join us for an activity or speaker designed to enhance our knowledge of Indigenous culture at Winslow Woods Park (2301 S. Highland Ave.), while we discuss Fresh Banana Leaves: Healing Indigenous Landscapes Through Indigenous Science by Jessica Hernandez. We'll bring the blankets, you bring any chairs or sun protection you might need!
Summary:
Get ready to read about environmental conservation from a different perspective. Jessica Hernandez, PhD, is an Indigenous Maya Ch’orti’ and Zapotec environmental scientist and founder of environmental agency Piña Soul, introduces several key concepts of Indigenous conservation that have been honed in by millennia of living with the land. Using a blend of case studies, historical overview, anecdotal stories that center the voices of land protectors and Indigenous women, Hernandez offers a different perspective of the land than we’ve been accustomed to.
Age 18 and up. Please register.
