Ellettsville Book Group: Western Lane

1:00 PM - 2:00 PM
Ellettsville Branch
Ellettsville Meeting Room A
Join us on the third Thursday of the month to discuss a dynamic mix of fiction and nonfiction. This month's selection is Western Lane by Chetna Maroo. Age 18 and up. Please register.

Summary:
"11-year-old Gopi has been playing squash since she was old enough to hold a racket. When her mother dies, her father enlists her in a quietly brutal training regimen, and the game becomes her world. Slowly, she grows apart from her sisters. Her life is reduced to the sport, guided by its rhythms: the serve, the volley, the drive, the shot and its echo. But on the court, she is not alone. She is with her pa. She is with Ged, a thirteen-year-old boy with his own formidable talent. She is with the players who have come before her. She is in awe. Western Lane is a valentine to innocence, to the closeness of sisterhood, to the strange ways we come to know ourselves and each other."

Other Worlds Book Club: A Psalm for the Wild-Built

5:30 PM - 6:30 PM
Downtown Library
Meeting Room 1B
Explore distant and not-so-distant worlds with us in this science fiction and fantasy-themed book club. This month's selection is A Psalm for the Wild-Built, a 2021 solarpunk novel by Becky Chambers that tackles themes of technology, environmentalism, and friendship. Age 18 and up. Please register.

Summary:
A Psalm for the Wild-Built is a refreshing post-apocalyptic tale that strays away from the gritty and dark tropes that populate the genre. Rather, robots that vanished into the wilderness years ago, reappear to ask, "What do people need?" The answer is not that simple. The life of a humble tea monk is upended in the appearance of the robot, and in pursuit of the answer to that question.

Summary:
"Worn out after decades of packing steel and raising hell, Viv the orc barbarian cashes out of the warrior’s life with one final score. A forgotten legend, a fabled artifact, and an unreasonable amount of hope lead her to the streets of Thune, where she plans to open the first coffee shop the city has ever seen. However, her dreams of a fresh start pulling shots instead of swinging swords are hardly a sure bet. Old frenemies and Thune’s shady underbelly may just upset her plans. To finally build something that will last, Viv will need some new partners and a different kind of resolve."
