1,000 Books Before Kindergarten is a program encouraging you to read 1,000 books with your child before they start kindergarten. The program is self-paced and you decide how often and how long you will read to your child. It can take anywhere from a few months to a few years. When you register for the program, you can come pick up a welcome packet, including a finger puppet and physical reading logs to color in! There will also be occasional surprises throughout the game, like stickers, a halfway-there certificate, and more (you can even earn a happy dance with a librarian)! When you finish the program, you’ll receive a graduation certificate, an invite to a quarterly themed storytime, a free book, and a farm friend adoption kit (just a stuffie, not a real one). Join us for a month of sustainable outdoor fun at Bloomington's parks. During the month of April, pick up a Park Crawl game board at the Library or download one here. Try to make it to seven of the eight listed parks as sustainably as possible (biking, walking, running, scooting, or riding a bus) then turn in your completed game card at any Library or Bookmobile location April 5–May 5 to get a free reusable straw while supplies last! Celebrate National Poetry Month with a series of recordings of family-friendly poems on a variety of topics. Call 812-349-3208 to listen! Recordings will be updated by 5 PM each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in April for a total of 13 delightful poems! All ages.
As part of their efforts to prevent child abuse, the education specialists at Susie's Place, a Child Advocacy Center, have prepared short videos that teach children practical methods for helping to keep their bodies safe. Register to receive one of their Body Safety Rules videos for children in grades Pre-K–2, 3–5, or 6–8. A preschooler's world is filled with wonder and curiosity. Join us for recommended books, engaging activities, and creative crafts to help your inquisitive child enjoy learning through play. This week we're making egg shakers! Use your own supplies or snag a take and make kit, they're grab-and-go and available beginning April 14 at the Main Library, Ellettsville Branch, or on the Bookmobile. Ages 3–6.
