Green Peeps Book Club: The Light Pirate
Thursday, September 28, 2023
6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Join this book club to discuss nature-focused reads each month. You'll also learn how to become more ecologically-minded through activities and speakers designed to enhance our reading. This month, we'll be discussing The Light Pirate by Lily Brooks-Dalton. We'll also be showing a portion of the documentary The Magnitude of All Things (2020) directed by Jennifer Abbott. This documentary gently confronts the state of eco-anxiety, solastalgia, and grief that people are experiencing around the world as they bear witness to the effects of climate change.
Summary:
Named after the devastating hurricane that destroys her town on the day of her birth, Wanda grows up in a Florida that is changing in unexpected ways due to the climate crisis. Readers walk along Wanda and her family as she grows up in a world that is being devastated by severe tropical storms, the waters encroach and the lives of humans are forced to change as the weather shifts. The characters struggle with the grief of their way of life ending and the wonder of the new world they are watching unfold around them. The Light Pirate is a visceral undertaking of what the future can look, feel, sound, and taste like.
Age 18 and up. Please register.
