Green Peeps Book Club: How to Do Nothing

6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Other
Join this book club to discuss nature-focused reads each month. You'll also learn how to become more ecologically-minded through activities and speakers designed to enhance our reading. This month, we'll be meeting at Bryan Park lower parking lot (1001 S. Henderson Street, Bloomington) and reading New York Times bestseller and one of Obama's favorite books of 2019: How to Do Nothing: Resisting the Attention Economy by Jenny Odell.

We'll start by doing nothing for 30 minutes—put all our cellular devices in a box and observe the outside world before coming back and discussing what we saw and felt. Despite the title, How to Do Nothing is a deep dive on how your attention and focus powers the Western economies of today. In this timely book, Jenny Odell lays out how our most valuable resource—our attention—is being consumed by technology and corporations that profit off of it. From the sneaky ways techno-determinism creeps into our ways of life, to how to be more mindful of how our focus is being directed, please join us in doing nothing at all in good company.

Age 18 and up. Please register.
