On December 15: Pianist Mingfei Li

Born in Jiamusi, China, Mingfei Li has a circuitous path to a piano career. She studied piano from the ages five to eleven, by the time of which she has had the complete Mozart Sonatas in her repertoire. At the age of eleven, she was forced to stop playing the piano for several years due to pressure to focus solely on academics. In 2013, she entered Lawrence University as a Math-Computer Science student but decided to investigate piano lessons as well. After one lesson, she was hooked, auditioned for the Conservatory, and was immediately accepted.

She has appeared in solo and chamber recitals across the US. In addition to formal recitals, Li has also performed widely in outreach concerts, bringing classical music outside the concert halls. As a chamber musician, she has frequently collaborated with instrumentalists and has been coached by notable artists such as Atar Arad, Mimi Zweig, Kevork Mardirossian, and Anne Epperson. She has appeared in the masterclasses of Anna Polonsky (solo piano), Ani Kavafian (violin-piano duo), and Karen Shaw, among others.

Li is currently appointed as an Associate Instructor of Music (Piano) at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, and has been on the faculty of the Young Pianists Program, a year-round pre-college piano program since Fall 2017. Li holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Lawrence University under Dr. Catherine Kautsky. She is currently pursuing a Master of Music degree at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music under Dr. Karen Shaw, where she is a recipient of Artistic Excellence Award and Irving & Lena Lo Scholarship. Her previous mentors include Luba Poliak, Anthony Padilla, and Michael Mizrahi.
